I woke up on the morning of my twenty-first birthday to breakfast in bed, Livvie’s delicious birthday gift to me. Together we ate our Eggs Benedict with green beans on the side.
“Can’t be giving you something that will make your pee smell awful when you’re headed out of town with your lover,” she said, explaining the substitution of the traditional asparagus.
“You are too good to me,” I proclaimed. “But I feel a bit bad. I won’t be here when you wake up for your birthday tomorrow.”
“Fear not. I plan to be significantly hungover, so the silence from you will be welcomed.”
I threw my napkin at her.
“Are you nervous yet?” she asked for the hundredth time this week. Why I had ever told her I was going to Boston for an overnight with Ashley was beyond me. Oh yeah. She was my roommate and best friend.
“Nope. Still not nervous, but quit asking me, will ya? That alone will start to give me performance anxiety.” To say I wasn’t nervous was actually a full-fledged lie, and Liv probably knew it. This whole week I struggled with sitting in classes, anticipation for the weekend a major distraction. Even my oceanography classes couldn’t hold my attention. In Ashley’s class, Tiffany noticed how absent-minded I was and gave me a photocopy of her notes from the week as a birthday present.
I don’t know why I was nervous. I trusted Ashley. Perhaps my nerves came from the fear I would be the one to disappoint. Liv had told me about her first time and that Jared was less than impressive. She said he’d only lasted three strokes before he went off. I felt at least somewhat in control since I’d not lost it as soon as my dick was in Ashley’s mouth.
After breakfast, I showered and shaved, getting away with only one small nick on the left side of my jaw. I ran my fingers through my hair and wondered if I should have gotten it cut over the past week.
I finished packing and glanced at the clock. I noted it was just before ten, when Ashley said he’d be here to pick me up, so I checked my appearance in the mirror again. I’d spent the past fifteen minutes either staring out the window or changing my clothes. At first, I’d simply slipped on track pants and a Nike shirt that said, ‘Just Do It,’ laughing to myself at the not-so-subtle message. Then I thought better of it and dressed in a pair of dress pants and a white button down shirt, but I felt that was trying too hard. Livvie stepped in and, as always, saved the day.
“Be your awesome self. Stop overthinking this, T.” She pulled my favorite dark wash jeans out of my closet along with a comfortable white T-shirt and a long-sleeved denim shirt. She rolled up the sleeves once I was dressed and stood back to take in the look. “With your Doc Martens, you’ll be perfect.
